And We're Off... Again
In 2015/16, we took an 8 month trip around the US in our renovated fifth wheel trailer. We absolutely fell in love with traveling, however, not everything about living a nomadic life was as glamorous as it seemed through Instagram posts. We struggled with feelings of loneliness and isolation at times despite our efforts to make friends and we also didn’t realize how much time and energy it would take to plan our itinerary. We knew that if we were to travel again, we would want to do it differently which is why we decided to go through Remote Year and let them do all the hard stuff for us.
What is Remote Year?
Remote Year is a company that creates itineraries for people looking to travel while working. They take a group of professionals on a year long trip visiting 12 different locations worldwide spending 4-5 weeks at each destination.
What is included in the program:
- 24/7 Workspace with guaranteed Wifi
- Local experiences and events
- Transportation between each destination on the itinerary
- Employer approval support
- Accommodations which include a furnished private room
- Local and travel staff (to help you find the "best" of the best)
Where are we Going?
We set off December 30th and our itinerary is called Bourdain: Curiosity and Hunger, as a tribute to the legendary Anthony Bourdain.
It is a testament to those who seek out adventure in the most unlikely places. It’s created for the souls who are fulfilled through genuine human interaction.
- Lima, Peru (January)
- Medellín, Colombia (February)
- Santiago, Chile (March)
- Mexico City, Mexico (April)
- Hanoi, Vietnam (May)
- Chiang Mai, Thailand (June)
- Kyoto, Japan (July)
- Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia (August)
- Split, Croatia (September)
- Lisbon, Portugal (October)
- Valencia, Spain (November)
- Cape Town, South Africa (December)
Preparing for the Trip
We have been prepping for this trip for about two months and had a long to do list including getting vaccinations and finding international health insurance. Thankfully, Remote Year gives you resources and suggestions to take care of all this. We also will not be able to take our cats Harry and Princess but are soooo grateful that the Lyons (James' parents) will be taking care of them for us.
Our biggest hurdle has been PACKING! We are bringing one checked bag each that needs to weigh under 44lbs and one medium backpack each as our personal item. We have done test runs, read several advice articles and are still trying to figure it out. Basically, we are very limited to what we can bring. We'll let you know what we ended up bringing and I'm sure along the way we will be swapping things out.
Join Us on our Adventure
Follow as I do my best to document this trip through blogs, pictures, and tweets (I got a Twitter account so I could put the bird logo on this page). I will try to give a realistic portrayal of our experience and show the highs, lows, laughs, and tears.
